“I’m Just Not Hungry” – How to Eat for Energy When You Don’t Feel Like Eating

This is something we hear a lot at Base Fit.

“I’m not really hungry.”
“I forget to eat.”
“I’ll just grab something later.”

For many women, especially busy mums, shift workers, or anyone training early mornings, appetite can be low. The problem is not hunger. The problem is energy.

If you are training, working, parenting, and trying to feel good in your body, food is not optional. It is fuel.

This blog is for anyone who struggles to eat proper meals, feels tired, flat, or weak in sessions, or relies on one main meal a day and snacks “here and there”.

Let’s keep this simple.

Why Not Eating Enough Makes You Feel Worse

When you don’t eat regularly, your body doesn’t magically adapt. It slows down.

You might notice:

  • Low energy in workouts

  • Feeling dizzy or shaky

  • Poor recovery and soreness

  • Brain fog and poor concentration

  • Strong cravings later in the day

Training while under-fuelled is like trying to drive with the fuel light on. You might move, but you won’t perform well and eventually you will stall.

How Often Should You Eat?

If full meals feel like too much, don’t force big portions.

Instead, aim for:

  • 3 small meals

  • 1 to 3 snacks per day

Think of food as regular top-ups, not huge sit-down meals.

A good rule:

Eat something every 3 to 4 hours, even if it’s small.

Easy, Healthy Snack Ideas (When You’re Not Hungry)

Snacks are often the missing piece. Done properly, they keep energy stable and stop you crashing later.

Protein-based snacks (for muscle, recovery and fullness)

  • Greek yoghurt with berries

  • Protein yoghurt pouch

  • Boiled eggs

  • Cottage cheese and oatcakes

  • Protein shake with milk or oat milk

Why it helps:
Protein supports muscle repair, keeps blood sugar stable, and prevents energy dips.

Carb-based snacks (for energy and training performance)

  • Banana

  • Apple with peanut butter

  • Rice cakes with honey

  • Oat bar or flapjack

  • Toast with jam

Why it helps:
Carbohydrates are your body’s main energy source, especially for training.

Fat-inclusive snacks (for hormones and long-lasting energy)

  • Handful of nuts

  • Nut butter on toast

  • Full-fat yoghurt

  • Cheese and crackers

Why it helps:
Healthy fats support hormones, brain function, and help keep you satisfied.

“But I’m Not Hungry in the Morning”

Very common, especially with early sessions.

Try:

  • A banana or yoghurt before training

  • A small smoothie

  • Half a protein shake

You do not need a full breakfast. You just need something.

Post-workout is then the time to eat a bit more.

What Your Body Actually Needs to Function

You don’t need to track obsessively, but understanding the basics helps.

Protein

  • Helps build and maintain muscle

  • Supports recovery

  • Keeps you feeling stronger and more toned

Rough guide:
Most women need a source of protein at every meal or snack

Carbohydrates

  • Your main fuel source

  • Essential for training performance

  • Not the enemy

If you train and feel exhausted, chances are carbs are too low.

Fats

  • Support hormones and mood

  • Help absorb vitamins

  • Keep energy steady

Low-fat diets often lead to low energy and poor recovery.

Deeper Dive: Why Skipping Food Affects Fat Loss

This surprises a lot of people.

Not eating enough can:

  • Slow metabolism

  • Increase stress hormones

  • Reduce training quality

  • Lead to overeating later

Consistent, regular fuel helps your body feel safe. When your body feels safe, it performs better, recovers better, and yes, burns fat more effectively.

Fat loss is not about eating less and less. It’s about eating enough of the right things, consistently.

The Takeaway

If you struggle with appetite:

  • Stop aiming for “perfect meals”

  • Eat little and often

  • Prioritise protein

  • Use snacks as fuel, not failure

  • Think energy first, not calories

You don’t need to overhaul everything. You just need to start.
